Midwives…

I think English needs to be reviewed some of the words that queen Elizabeth made us learn and use do not make sense.

Kenyans are proud of having learn't the British English and they proudly write, among the languages they know and speak fluently, British English is one of them. And since queen Elizabeth is still the queen of the land whose first teachers of English came from this English belongs to her.

A midwife is somebody trained to deliver babies.  My lecturer used to say that the meaning of the word is found in the word itself, let’s define the term ‘midwife’ "mid"–found or occurring in or around the center of or halfway through something. "Wife"–is the woman to whom a man is married. Now let us get the meaning of the word…  I can only think, they are called midwives because in one way or the other they get to see what the husband sees when he is with his wife.

The word does not even reflect on the male nurses who assist during child birth. English language should be reviewed if the King Jameth version of the bible was reviewed and the English simplified, why not some of these English words. 

The interesting thing is that we have used these words until we do not question them or even think of changing them. I think we would even feel guilty of changing those words. What would the queen say, if she heard that we are questioning some of these words? 

Am sure you are also wondering like me if we decided to change a word like midwife what will it be replaced with…sometimes it feels like, it would be a lot of work reviewing some of these words…other times I wonder whether it is really worth the energy… others times I wonder why change now the words are not hurting anyone they just words and we have other important things to do than challenge the British English but if we are reviewing our cultural practices why not review English words too…and since Kenya these days we have started vetting everything, it will not be a big hassle we are already doing it anyway…

Vote for me and I promise when I get to power male birth attendants you will not be called mid-wives again…

I still cannot understand what the hullabaloo is all about with the condom advert. My view, that advert makes a lot of sense. The makers of the advert are realistic and admitting that married people are having illicit sex or enjoying the forbidden fruits outside of their matrimonial homes. What I construed from the advert is that the woman is not having her nocturnal exercises at home and hence her need to keep a side dish to provide  those essential services. Am sure there are many valid reasons in homes that are driving couples to leave their matrimonial beds. That, I think is what the church leaders should be addressing, not the sheath they choose for protection. We need to know why respectable men/women feel the need to quench their thirst away from home. Luo is a Romantic Language…

In my short or long stay on this earth I have had the privilege of interacting with many of the languages spoken in Kenya and one dialect I would say has stood out and I have come to love is the Luo dialect. The dialect according to me is very romantic; it should actually be classified among the others of the world which are regarded as romantic. The way their words flow, as they speak, one has no option but to enjoy listening. This is a language, firstly the words rhyme so well with English language; secondly a word can be used in so many instances until one gets confused. Take for example the now common words ‘ Gini Wesikawo ” when these words were spoken by supporters of one team who were shouting to the supporters of the opposing team, even before a football match was over that they have taken the trophy the same words have now evolved or transformed until they are featuring in adverts as a way of bidding us goodbye. Masaku sevens ….I hear it was a show to behold….

I have really been thinking a lot about what I hear happened during Masaku 7’s. And mind you though being in Machakos on that day I got home early before all the free live movies started. So I just heard just like some of you. No wonder people say free things are not good. In one way or the other let us be glad it happened now in broad day light the last time Masaku sevens was in Machakos the young people were discreet they did their mating in the darkness where their parents could not see them and the consequences of what happened at night were visible the following morning with the littering of their implements of trade.
